How to choose a digital product people may actually buy

A digital product is not valuable because it is a PDF, template, course or prompt pack. The format is only the container. Value starts with a problem somebody cares enough about to solve.

Start with the cost of the problem

Good product ideas usually reduce one of five costs: time, money, risk, confusion or repeated effort. A useful starting question is: what is the buyer currently losing by not having this?

Choose one customer, not everyone

“Small businesses” is usually too broad. “Self-employed massage therapists who lose evenings to invoicing” is much easier to understand, research and write for. Specificity makes product decisions simpler.

Sell an outcome, not a pile of files

Instead of “50 AI prompts,” think “a repeatable way to create a month of usable content.” Instead of “business worksheets,” think “a decision system that turns a vague idea into a launchable offer.”

Validate before expanding

  1. Write the problem in one sentence.
  2. Find ten people who plausibly have it.
  3. Observe how they currently solve it.
  4. Build the smallest resource that improves the situation.
  5. Ask for payment before turning it into a giant system.

What to avoid

Avoid fake scarcity, invented testimonials, guaranteed-income claims and products generated so quickly that the buyer has to do the quality control. AI can speed up creation, but the seller still owns the standard.
