What AI should automate first in a small business
The best first automation is rarely the most impressive one. Start where work is repetitive, reversible and easy to check.
Good early targets
- Research organisation: summarising sources, grouping questions and identifying repeated themes.
- Drafting: first drafts of posts, FAQs, outlines and internal notes.
- Repurposing: turning one approved source into multiple formats without changing the underlying claims.
- Classification: tagging enquiries, sorting feedback and routing routine requests.
- Reporting: combining known metrics into a simple weekly summary.
Keep humans on consequential decisions
Payments, contracts, refunds, public accusations, hiring, legal claims, security changes and large ad spend deserve explicit human control. AI can prepare information and recommend an action; it should not silently take a high-impact action because a prompt sounded confident.
A simple automation test
Ask four questions: Is the task frequent? Is the input predictable? Can the output be checked cheaply? Is a mistake reversible? The more “yes” answers, the better the task is for early automation.
Measure the result
Automation that saves no meaningful time and improves no measurable outcome is just extra machinery. Track time saved, error rate, response time or revenue influence and keep only what proves useful.
